Growing up a lot of my friends knew exactly what career they wanted to go into once they’d finished school. I did not. In fact, I had absolutely no idea whatsoever! When deciding upon a degree course, I chose to study Geography because I enjoyed it, even though I wasn’t sure where it would lead.
Throughout university, I began to specialize in Human Geography and was inspired to complete a Masters in Research in Human Geography after attending lectures focused on how modern technology can help us with geographic research. I was excited to be working on very novel research techniques, but didn’t feel that a career in academia was the right fit for me.
Finishing university in the middle of the pandemic meant that there were fewer roles advertised and I was constantly being outcompeted by people with more experience. I felt very frustrated and helpless until Oracle offered me the opportunity to complete a month of work experience!
Even before I arrived for my first day, I was made to feel very welcome with regular phone and email communication. After a couple of weeks, I was really enjoying the variety of tasks that I was completing and I knew that all the training that I was receiving had really helped me to learn a lot in a short space of time. I was beginning to get nervous about the prospect of having to return to a demotivating job-hunt at the end of the work experience, when I was offered the opportunity to stay and become an Account Executive! I was completely over the moon.
I am still very new to the world of PR and have a lot to learn, but I am really excited to see where my role at Oracle takes me.
