One of the sad inevitabilities of old age is too often, loneliness; another might be inaccessibility to certain services; ones which ultimately make the lives easier for our older generation. At Oracle, we do our best to help combat these problems by teaming up with ‘Age Concern Epsom and Ewell’; an independent charity dedicated solely to improving the lives of the elderly.
What Services Do ‘Age Concern Epsom and Ewell’ Offer?
So, what does Age Concern actually do? Essentially, this foundation offers a range of solutions to problems experienced by the elderly that others might take for granted.
Many people in the elderly community suffer from social isolation. The effects of loneliness can be hugely detrimental to a person’s mental wellbeing, not to mention their resilience against age-related neurocognitive changes. In order to reduce the chances of this happening to an individual, Age Concern works with ‘Befrienders’ – a group of people who volunteer their time to visit the elderly. This has been described as a hugely rewarding experience for both parties.
“I find nothing more satisfying than seeing a lonely face brighten up when I visit. An hour’s visit (or longer if wished) once a week is a big improvement to someone who is on their own at home. Chatting about the old days over a cuppa and having a laugh makes a big difference to a long day.”
The charity also offers other services, such as small gardening or DIY tasks, professional support in foot and hearing aid clinics, IT support, tea-and-chat meetups, transport, and will-writing services.
What Do Oracle Do to Help?
‘Friendship in Business’ is one of Oracle’s’ chief values. Building relationships is important to the firm in every regard, which is why we support this wonderful charity whenever possible. In light of the imminent festivities, this Christmas, Oracle has created a luxury hamper which is being raffled by the charity at their Curry Night, taking place on November 26th at local Indian restaurant, Tamarind Spice. We hope that this hamper will raise lots of money for the charity, which will subsequently be used towards ‘The Big Give’, this Christmas.
Previous to this, Oracle joined the charity for a donation-aided comedy evening, where Viv and Tara helped to run the bar!
How Can You Help?
Other than their office, which was kindly donated by the Epsom and Ewell council, Age Concern relies entirely on donations. To find out more about how you can help keep this fantastic charity up and running, or if you’d like to volunteer your services – please visit: https://ageconcernepsom.org.uk/
